Blog Cover Image vs. Thumbnail: What's the Difference?

Confused about the difference between blog cover images and thumbnails? This guide explains what each is, when to use which term, and how they differ by platform.

Blog Cover Image vs. Thumbnail: What's the Difference?

The terms 'blog cover image,' 'featured image,' and 'thumbnail' are often used interchangeably—but they can mean different things depending on context. Here's a clear breakdown.

Blog Cover Image

A blog cover image (or 'hero image') is the large image displayed at the top of a blog post. It's typically 1200 × 630px or wider and is displayed prominently. On Medium it's called the 'cover.' On Ghost and Substack, it's also called the 'cover image.'

Featured Image

Featured image is the WordPress term for the same concept. It's the image that 'features' or represents the post. WordPress uses it in blog index grids, widgets, and social media previews (OG image). On Hashnode, it's called 'cover image.'

Thumbnail

A thumbnail is a smaller, zoomed-out version of an image used to represent content in a compact space—like a video grid on YouTube, a post listing in a blog index, or a social media feed. YouTube thumbnails are the most famous example (1280×720px).

When They're the Same

For most blogs, the featured image/cover image is automatically resized to create thumbnails for the blog index page. So the same image serves as both. WordPress does this automatically—your featured image becomes thumbnails in grids and feeds.

When They Differ

YouTube has separate thumbnail (1280×720px) and banner images. Some advanced WordPress setups use different images for the hero and the index thumbnail. Pinterest uses different aspect ratios for pins vs. board covers.

Conclusion

For most bloggers, you only need one image per post. Instant Thumbnail generates the perfect blog cover/featured image/thumbnail—whatever you call it—in seconds.
